Top 10 iPhone Apps of 2008

December 27th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in iPhone Apps, iPhone News

EasyWriter: It seems simple—you can type URLs in landscape mode with its larger, more luxuriously spaced keyboard. Why not emails? EasyWriter solved it. Free; $2.99 for Pro edition

Facebook: For Facebookers (um, everyone, right?) it’s essential—a beautifully designed, uber-functional implementation that’s always with you. Free

EverNote: Already a popular web service and found on other devices, Evernote does something that every location-aware cameraphone should be able to do: quickly take and store geotagged photos so you can remember stuff. Free

Google Mobile: Google Mobile was a solid app (but not particularly essential)—and then came voice search. Free

RjDj: A totally unique music application that processes sound from your environment and replays it according to a set program, creating a trippy, always-evolving soundscape. Free to try; $2.99 expanded version

VLC Remote: One of the first apps we loved was the iTunes Remote—now, the Swiss army knife of media players VLC has one of its very own. Free ad-supported simple version; $1.99 for more controls and no ads

Wikipedia Mobile: Finally, the definitive Wikipedia reader for the iPhone. $2.99

Night Camera: Thanks to its accelerometer, your iPhone knows when it’s being jiggled. Night Camera, simply and ingeniously, uses this data to make your low-light picture clearer. $0.99

Tweetie: Twitter apps: there are a lot of ‘em. Tweetie, though, is the closest you’ll get to the Twitter desktop experience, and therefore our best of. $2.99

Recorder: While not the sexiest apps, a good solid voice recorder can be incredibly handy—especially if you are a handsome FBI investigator in the town of Twin Peaks. $0.99

2.0 - 2.0.1 Problems and Solutions

August 11th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in iPhone Guides

Read The Full article HERE, Taken from http://sleepers.net

Many comments on various issues in 2.0 or 2.0.1 upgrades. Many questions have been answered numerous times. I am adding a summary of a lot of the problems and solutions in this post for reference. I can also update it over time if we need it.

Problem: Mail App crashes after my update.
Solution: This is caused by the sync of the backup from iTunes. The permissions on the mail folder are incorrect (it’s owned by root). The easiest fix is to run bossprefs, click more, and click “fix user dir permissions”. You may need to reboot.

Problem: I have AT&T or a contract carrier. I jailbroke with your guide and now I have no service.
Solution: You activated and you shouldn’t have. iTunes will activate for you but because you clicked the activate button, iTunes did not get to activate. Now your account is not validated. You need to redo the steps and not check activation on your image.

Problem: I have an unlocked 2g phone. I updated to 2.0. Now I get incorrect SIM.
Solution: You did not activate and unlock. Redo the steps and make sure you activate and unlock. In winpwn, this is “activate” and configure boot neuter on the last tab. (See my guide). On osx, this is saying “I am not legit” when asked in pwnage.

Problem: Winpwn IPSW will not complete. It just errors out.
Solution: This one is caused because the size of the image is larger than the partition space. Generally resizing the partition to 550mb solves it.

Problem: I cant restore my custom firmware. I just get error 6, 1, 2, (something low).
Solution: This has multiple causes. Generally, you are not in DFU mode. See DFU guide. Winpwn solution after ruling out the above: Delete the device file (x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw) in your iTunes folder. (Search for the file). This can also be caused by using the incorrect firmware image (a 3g on a 2g for example).

Problem: My appstore apps are all crashing.
Solution: Sync them back on using iTunes. Should solve it. If not, uninstall them all then sync them on with iTunes.

Problem: I already restored my backup but iTunes keeps telling me I need to restore my backup.
Solution: See my post on this.

Problem: My installer has (insert problem here).
Solution: Installer 4 is not ready for use. See my post on it.  Use Cydia.

Problem: I did not install Cydia and installed only installer. I cant install Cydia or any apps now.
Solution: Redo the pwning with Cydia in the image. (Yes, start over).

Problem: Cydia just crashes when I load it. I cant get it to work at all. Cydia sucks!
Solution: Your pwnage install is corrupted. See this post on it.

Problem: In pwnage, I can’t download any of your packages.
Solution: Yes, only telesphoreo works. Skip this and install them from Cydia afterwards.

Problem: I have a 2g iPhone and need it unlocked. All the bootneuter settings are greyed out and I cant select anything. Why?
Solution: You selected a 3g firmware on your 2g iPhone. Download the correct firmware and start again.

Problem: After installing an app, I get a spinning wheel for a long time.
Solution: SpringBoard for 2.0 sucks. It may take 5-10 minutes in some cases to add a new app. There is no solution but to wait it out.  This is much worse on appstore apps once you get a load of them. See this post.

Problem: I am in DFU mode and I just get error 1604, 1602, 1601 (some 160x). I am pulling my hair out! What do I do?!
Solution: This one sucks. There’s no single answer for it. Here are some possible suggestions:

  1. Validate you are using the correct firmware. You can get this if you are using an incompatible firmware (3g for 2g for example).
  2. Restart your computer and try again.
  3. Try another computer
  4. Try switching USB ports
  • Uninstall and reinstall iTunes 7.7

PC & Mac Guide - Downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4

August 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in iPhone Guides

*This is only for 1st Generation iPhones that have been upgraded… not for 3G iPhones*

    1. Download iTunes 7.5 from here: Direct Download iTunes 7.5 to Activate iPhone Anywhere Internationally » My Digital Life
    2. Uninstall your current version of iTunes and reboot your PC.
    3. Go to My Documents > My Music > iTunes and delete the file called “iTunes Library.itl”
    4. Install iTunes 7.5

    Note for OSX users:
If you are on OSX and want to attempt to downgrade your iTunes, you can try these steps:

Load up Terminal and type the following:
    killall iTunesHelper
    sudo -s
    rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app
    rm -r /Library/Receipts/iTunesX.pkg
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes*
    rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app
    rm -r /Library/Receipts/iTunesX.pkg
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes*
    rm -r /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

    5. Download the 1.1.4 restore file from the here http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/dow…o=file&id=2231 if you don’t already have it.
    6. Put your phone into DFU mode using the following steps
    a. Plug your phone into iTunes (ignore the message that pops up)
    b. Power the phone OFF
    c. Hold power and home for EXACTLY 10 seconds
    d. Release power (continue to hold home)
    e. iTunes will recognize iphone in restore mode (you can let go of home now)
    7. Hold shift and click Restore - select the 1.1.4 firmware file you downloaded
    8. After it’s done restoring you will get error 1015 and the phone should be in recovery mode (iTunes logo with cable)
    9. Important! Hold shift and click Restore and select the 1.1.4 firmware file and RESTORE AGAIN.
    10. After it’s done open iLiberty “other tools” tab and click “jump out of recovery mode”. (note - if you didn’t restore TWICE as instructed above the phone won’t jump out of recovery mode)
Note: On a Mac you can use Independence to kick out of recovery mode. http://code.google.com/p/independence/downloads/list

OK, you now have a phone with 1.1.4 Firmware and the 4.05.04 baseband. Now we have to downgrade the baseband

    11. Download KiPhone
*Unzip all files into a folder before you run the program or it will fail*
    12. Run KiPhone with Debug Boot and iErase options checked. (Leave the box for downgrade UNCHECKED)
    13. Plug your phone into iTunes and shift+click restore to 1.1.4 AGAIN. This will write the correct 4.04.05 baseband to you phone. (You may have to put your phone into recovery mode manually for iTunes to let you restore - hold power and home until the phone reboots - continue to hold until you see the iTunes logo)
    14. Your phone should now be factory 1.1.4 with the matching baseband - all you have left is to jailbreak/unlock with you method of choice.
